Conservation is a type of practice that protect animals and plants from becoming endangered or extinct. This is achieved through breeding or keeping animals captive or away from the dangers of the wilderness. In Zoo Tycoon 2 there are four levels of conservation, with the introduction fo extinction from Zoo Tycoon 2: Dino Danger Pack.

Low Risk[]
Animals in this category are identified as a paw with a green circle. These animals have the least concern of becoming extinct because their population is balance and abundant.
Vulnerable[]
Animals in this category are identified as a paw with a yellow triange. These animals have recently experienced a decline due to destruction or increase of prey. These animals are given more attention than those animals who are of low risk.
Endangered[]
Animals in this category are identified as a paw with an orange diamond. These animals have drastically experienced a decline in population and only a few hundred of this species remain. These animals are carefully taken care of and going through breeding programs. If bred, in Zoo Tycoon 2: Endangered Species, the player will receive a balloon bouquet as a gift.
Critically Endangered[]
Animals in this category are identified as a paw with a red pentagon. These animal are in severe risk of becoming extinct with only a few hundred remaining. These animals are given the most attention in conservation breeding programs and are held in captivity. If bred, in Zoo Tycoon 2: Endangered Species, the player will receive a balloon bouquet as a gift.
Extinct[]
Animals in this category are identified as a paw with a white "x". These animals no longer roam the planet and have died out. In Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals, the player can find the fossils of these animals and revive them into healthy living animals.
Conservation Areas[]
A feature introduced in Zoo Tycoon 2: Endangered Species, a conservation area is a piece of land that cannot be altered in anyway. The player cannot remove foilage or terraform, but can raise animals in these conservation areas. Every map introduced in Endangered Species includes a conservation area.
Conservation Breeding Center[]
If the player successfully completes the "Endangered Species Campaign" they will unlock the Conservation Breeding Center, a building that increases the chance of endangered offspring.
