Biomes are characterized by many different factors. (such as trees, shrubs, and grasses),leaf types (such as broadleaf and needleleaf), plant spacing (forest, woodland, savannah), etc. In the original Zoo Tycoon, they are called terrains.
Terrains or later referred to biomes in the series are used to create a suitable exhibit for animals. In Zoo Tycoon, are nine major terrains. However, animals required a specific combination in order to make them happy.
There were also eight terrains that could be used to further make an exhibit suitable.

Biomes in Zoo Tycoon 2 is a tool used to create suitable animal habitats.
One may choose to paint on the terrain, plants, rocks and similar, or add plants and rocks manually. The game contains 14 biomes, 10 without the Marine Mania expansion.
